Abstract:
The two heaviest particles of the Standard Model of particle physics are the top quark and the Higgs boson. The role of the Higgs boson is to give mass to all Standard Model particles by spontaneously breaking a symmetry of the model. It is a mystery why this symmetry-breaking occurs. Does the top quark have responsibility here, or is it just an interested observer? In this lecture, I will describe what is known about these two still-mysterious particles and speculate about their secret relationship.
